Devil Woman was a song recorded by Cliff Richard in 1976. It made it up to #9 on the UK charts. The Billboard 100 showed it as high as #6. It was Richard’s biggest US success. Let’s learn more about this famous song.
It was written by Terry Britten. He was English singer-songwriter who wrote songs for people like Tina Turner, Olivia Newton John, and even Michael Jackson. He had some other hits such as “What’s Love Got to Do with It”. When Cliff performed Devil Woman Terry played guitar. It was recorded at Abbey Road studio, where the Beatles often recorded.
The Devil Woman song tells a story. A man believes he has been cursed by an evil cat. The man seeks out a gypsy who he thinks can remove the curse. But he’s stunned when he learns that the curse didn’t come from the cat. The gypsy cursed him in order to bring him to her.
Many songs like Devil Woman that have a story to tell are sparsely produced. In other words they are very simple songs. They have a minimum of instruments and generally simple tunes. Devil Woman is no different. The instruments used to record the song include a guitar, an electric piano, drums and percussion. And of course the singer.
Pop songs don’t usually use the combo of major and minor chords heard in Devil Woman. Songs at the time didn’t use more than an octave like it did.
Other groups have covered, or performed, the song. The Accused is one of them. The band was founded in 1981 in Washington. Its style is what they called splatter rock. Many of the sounds in their music are made to mimic the sounds from the horror movies that they loved. These include shrieking lyrics, and chainsaw like guitar riffs.
In 2005 Cradle of Faith covered Devil Woman. This group performed extreme metal music. The band said they played any kind of metal. The song fit them nicely.
No matter who plays it, Devil Woman is a devilish song.
